Summer Music:
  • started as a week-long exemplar project to bring some new ideas and direction to an established pioneer project in youth music;
  • designed as an intense and exciting week of making music without barriers, and equally open for classical, early, baroque, folk, rock, junk and jazz influences.
And not just western European music. (history)
 Learning by making music 
 
Dave and Summer Music now create workshops, residencies and performance projects for people of all ages.
 
  • This included OMP, last run during National Youth Music Week for the Music Development Agency;
  • work in schools, colleges and museums;
  • work with older musicians for Help The Aged;
  • work linked to Festivals, events and exhibitions, so that young and old people and their families can have opportunities to meet and learn from musicians from around the world;
  • residencies and projects of story-telling, drama and dance, and exploring the music running through life and its representations 
     Learning by making music

 

 

Summer Music shows that people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds can work together with to create a performance of new music, in a week or less!
 
It emphasises:
respect for music and for musicians,
respect for learning and sharing music,
respect for the diversity of approaches,
respect for the skills and heritages of music making and associated arts.
 
Summer Music has a wide network of musicians to work with.
 
They are never primarily teachers, though  they are appropriately skilled, experienced and qualified as such... 
... but they teach best by acting as performers, composers, experimenters in music making and creators of performances, in which all experience learning by contributing.
 
Project participants, old and young, are treated as equal and valued collaborators in creating a musical performance, and as a consequence, become very committed and active learners.
